Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Paul, and you’re listening to the Northstar Integrated Health and Physical Medicine Center podcast, coming to you from right here in Lisle, Illinois. Today we’re talking about something that affects almost every single one of us. Workplace wellness. And I don’t mean overhauling your entire life or buying a fancy standing desk. I’m talking about small, simple things you can start doing today, right at your desk, that can make a real difference in how you feel.

So here’s the thing. Most of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work. And a lot of that time, we’re sitting. Slouching. Staring at a screen. And over time, that adds up. Your neck starts to ache. Your lower back gets tight. Your shoulders creep up toward your ears. Sound familiar? You’re definitely not alone.

Let’s start with something super simple. Your posture. Now, I know, I know, everyone talks about posture. But here’s why it really matters. When you sit with your head pushed forward, which a lot of us do when we’re focused on a screen, that changes the amount of stress on your neck and upper spine. The further forward your head drifts, the heavier it effectively feels to your spine. We’re talking about a head that normally weighs around ten to twelve pounds starting to feel like thirty, forty, even sixty pounds of pressure on your neck. So what can you do? First, bring your screen up to eye level if you can. You shouldn’t be looking down at your monitor. And check in with yourself throughout the day. Chin back, shoulders relaxed, feet flat on the floor. Just that simple reset, a few times a day, can take a real load off your spine.

The second tip is one I love because it costs nothing and takes about thirty seconds. Movement breaks. Set a timer on your phone. Every forty five to sixty minutes, just stand up. Walk to the water fountain. Roll your shoulders. Take three or four deep breaths. That’s it. Your spine is not designed to stay in one position for hours at a time. The discs in your spine actually get their nutrition from movement. They’re kind of like a sponge. When you move, they absorb fluid and nutrients. When you sit still for too long, that process slows down. So moving is not just good for your mood or your energy, it’s literally feeding your spine.

Now here’s one more that people often overlook. Hydration. Drink your water. I know it sounds almost too basic, but your spinal discs are made up largely of water. When you’re dehydrated, those discs can start to lose height and become less effective at cushioning your vertebrae. Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weigh one hundred and sixty pounds, that’s around eighty ounces. Keep a bottle on your desk. Make it easy on yourself.

Now, these tips are a great starting point. But here’s what I want you to know. If you’re already dealing with neck pain, back pain, headaches, or that nagging tension that just won’t go away, those are signs your body is asking for some help. Don’t just push through it. That’s where we come in.
